WNBL 27: Key insights into the UC Capitals’s season fixture

A rivalry to bring in the season

The UC Capitals season will open with a bang as we look to take down the refreshed Bendigo Spirit at home.

As the dust settles from Bendigo’s recent signing of former Capitals star Jade Melbourne, we’ll have our work cut out for us early to prevent her adding another win at AIS Arena to her tally – and that’s before we even consider the reigning WNBL26 MVP Issy Borlase. The Caps take on the Spirit three times during the season, so we’ll have heaps to look forward to as familiar faces clash.

Caps on the road early

After our home opener on October 17, the Caps spend a month on the road before returning to Canberra in November.

In this early trip, the Caps will head up the highway to face the Ally Wilson and Issy Bourne-bolstered Flames (23/10) and then head down to VIC to challenge Cheryl Chambers’ Geelong Venom (31/10) and an early rematch against the Spirit in Bendigo (7/11). These early games will be critical to firm up ladder position before hosting the WNBL26 champions, the Townsville Fire, as we return to Canberra for November 15.

Themed rounds at a glance

The WNBL has announced three league-wide themed rounds for WNBL27 – all of which the Caps will be playing a home and away fixture on.

Indigenous Round will take place during Round 6, and will kick off for the Caps at AIS Arena as they host the WNBL Tasmania Jewels at home (22/11) before flying over to Perth to play the Lynx (24/11). Round 8’s Mental Health Round will be busy for the Caps, starting at home vs the Spirit on Friday (4/12) and catching the direct flight to Melbourne for our matchup against the Southside Melbourne Flyers on Sunday (6/12). To mark the start of 2027, Pride Round will cover Round 13and see us turning up the heat in Perth vs the Lynx (8/01) before hosting the Venom in Canberra (12/01).

Consistency in Canberra during November/December

Caps fans can expect a consistent presence from the Caps as we enjoy an extended stint at home between Rounds 5 and 9, playing six games in the span of a month.

Your Canberra weekend plans will be sorted as we host the Fire (15/11) and Jewels (22/11) on Sunday, Venom (27/11) and Spirit (4/12) for your Friday evenings, before closing out against the Adelaide Lightning on Saturday (12/12) and Flames on Tuesday (15/12). We’ll be raring to show up and show out for the local crowd with a string of back-to-back games, so we can’t wait to see you there!

Three games against the newcomers

And in case you missed it: big news in the WNBL this season as we’re joined by a ninth competitor in the Tasmania Jewels.

The Caps have an edge in the legacy department, but the Jewels can’t be written off in their inaugural season. The debutant has no lack of proven talent – already having signed WNBL veterans Steph Reid and Keely Froling to their roster for WNBL27.We’ll face-off three times before the New Year (22/11, 29/11 & 19/12) – and no doubt both teams will be hoping to secure the season series for the first time.
