The UC Capitals headed up north seeking redemption against the title favourites Townsville Fire, but ultimately didn’t have enough to secure their third win of the season as they fell 101-61 to the Fire.
1st quarter
As they’ve done throughout the season, the Fire started the game strong getting out to an early 13-2 start before a Jade Melbourne fastbreak and-1 got the Caps back on board. Townsville, however, added a Courtney Woods 3 and an Alex Fowler fastbreak layup to for a Caps timeout at the 4-minute mark, down 18-5. The timeout hardly changed anything as Townsville proceed to hum along going up 24-8 before the Caps defense tightened and their offensive board work finally paid off as they closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to close the gap 26-18.
2nd quarter
Like they did in the first quarter, Townsville came off the quarter break hot outscoring the Caps 14-4 to stretch the lead to 18, 40-22 with 5:25 left in the half. A Caps timeout did little to stop Townsville momentum, as the hosts kept raining threes while the Caps couldn’t find the mark. Jade Melbourne got going a bit, getting to the paint and to the line, but the Fire juggernaut kept rolling into the half up 57-31.

3rd quarter
The third quarter was pretty much the same story as the first two, with the Caps continuing to get to the paint and knock down threes, while the Caps struggled to get anything going. Perhaps the game could be summed up when late in the quarter, the Caps played perfect defense for 23.5 seconds only for Lauren Cox to hit a desperation heave as the shot clock buzzer sounded. The quarter ended with the Fire up 80-44.
4th quarter
The Caps offensive struggles continued in the fourth, managing only six points until Isa Brancatisano, Jayda Clark and Nicole Munger got some baskets in the last two minutes. Overall the Caps had their worst shooting game of the season, managing only a 3/23 clip from 3 en route to a 40-point loss.
