Opals go unbeaten with strong Caps influence
The Australian Opals delivered a commanding campaign in Türkiye, winning all five of their games against Argentina, Türkiye, Japan, Hungary and Canada. Already qualified for the upcoming FIBA Women’s World Cup following their Asia Cup triumph last year, the tournament provided a valuable opportunity for the Opals to test combinations and build cohesion within a new-look squad.
The Capitals had a strong presence within the Opals program, with Jade Melbourne and Zitina Aokuso making their mark on the court, while UC Capitals head coach Paul Gorris contributed as an assistant coach.
Melbourne made an immediate impact in the tournament opener against Argentina, finishing with 12 points, three assists and a rebound in a composed performance marking her return to the team since the Paris Olympics.
For Aokuso, the tournament was another step forward in her international journey. Her standout performance came against Hungary, where she recorded 13 points, nine rebounds and an assist to earn Player of the Game honours.
Reflecting on the experience of playing within the Opals environment, Aokuso highlighted the importance of embracing the opportunity to learn alongside seasoned teammates.
“You definitely have to step up when you're playing with our more experienced players and just take it all in, ask for advice, and learn quick,” she said.
Head coach Sandy Brondello emphasised that the tournament was an important building block as the team continues to evolve.
“We’re still in an evaluation period,” she said. “We’re playing around with some combinations to see what works and what doesn’t. It’s still a learning phase for us, and we’re going to get better.”
“It’s the first time this particular group has been together. You saw some really good moments and some moments where we’re trying to experiment. That’s why we need these games as we move forward.”
Tall Ferns show fight and growth
In Puerto Rico, the New Zealand Tall Ferns faced a tough schedule against Spain, Italy, Senegal, world number one USA, and hosts Puerto Rico. While the results didn’t fall their way, the tournament proved a valuable development experience for the group.
The Tall Ferns were led by head coach Nat Hurst, who also serves as an assistant coach with the UC Capitals, further strengthening the club’s international ties.
Capitals guard Emme Shearer played a key role throughout the campaign, starting in all five games and leading the team in assists. Her standout performance came against Italy, where she recorded eight points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals in an all-round effort.
Hurst praised her team’s resilience and unity across a challenging week of competition.
“I’m incredibly proud of our group. They fought in every game, showed up for each other, and continued to grow as the tournament went on,” she said.
“We kept chipping away, improving day by day, and most importantly, staying connected as a unit through some tough moments.”
“We’ve built something really strong in terms of our identity. The group stayed united, committed to each other, and kept showing resilience throughout the week. That togetherness is a big part of who we are becoming as a team.”
