With just two weeks until the WNBL season gets underway, the UC Capitals are continuing to build towards Round 1 as they prepare to face the Southside Melbourne Flyers in Albury tomorrow.

The Capitals will meet Southside again after defeating the Flyers in the Townsville Tip-Off earlier in September.

The Caps victory saw Isabel Palmer lead the way with 24 points, two rebounds, while Manny Puoch impressed against her former team with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists.

The rematch will provide another opportunity for the Capitals to test themselves against WNBL opposition as they continue building combinations ahead of Round 1.

Head Coach Paul Goriss said the group has continued to make progress, with the players becoming more comfortable with one another as they work towards the start of the season.

“With any new group you want that continuity, I think as much as you can do in practice is great, but you actually want to see and test yourself against other WNBL opposition,” Goriss said.

The Caps have spent the past several weeks working on their game and building connections across the squad, with a mix of returning players and new faces coming together ahead of the WNBL season.

The clash with Southside will be followed by two games against the Sydney Flames next week, giving the Caps further opportunities to put their pre-season work into practice before their attention turns to the opening round.

“This game against Southside and the two against Sydney next week are really important to get us ready for the start of the season with a new group,” Goriss said.

“Building that chemistry on court, we have some game goals tomorrow that we want to try achieve ourselves.”

With Round 1 against Bendigo Spirit now just two weeks away, the Caps are entering the stretch of their preparations.

“Having these practice games and these practice sessions now with nearly the full group I think has really given us a headstart getting into the season,” Goriss said.
